Dear MCC Families,
Sawubona!
Thank you very much for your donations of swim suits, goggles and pool supplies. The trip to Swaziland was a remarkable experience. The Swazi people are peaceful, gracious and respectful. It is a remarkable culture, and although they have very few material things, the abundance of smiles and appreciation for life is contagious. Orinda Aquatics has started a lifelong friendship and swimming relationship with a dedicated but small coaching staff that serves and teaches swimming to 1500 children a week. It is an honor to have been asked to assist Don Heidary. Don plans to offer a presentation on the Swaziland trip with details of future goals and plans to develop the Swazi swim program. We will send out a contact soon with the date and time. Attached is a picture of some of the kids I met on the trip. Please enjoy. Again, thank you for your generosity.
Love,
Christina

We would like to thank you for your unprecedented patience while we have been working toward establishing our coaching staff for the 2010 season.
We still believe that all good things come to those who wait and are certain that the wait will have been well worth it! As you may or may not be aware, there are several clubs in the area that are undergoing coaching transitions. We have done our best to make sure that the changes for the Waves will have a tremendously positive impact on our team, families and club not only for the short term, but over the long term as well. Our competitive coaching staff for the upcoming season has evolved and will be better than ever. The coaches and the board have listened to the feedback we have received over the last few seasons and have made changes accordingly. We are thoroughly excited to welcome back some familiar faces as well as the new additions to our coaching staff and anticipate a phenomenal season ahead.
We pleased to announce that Dave Schurhoff will be continuing his tenure as our Head Coach! With Dave at the helm, our team will benefit greatly from the experience, leadership and continuity he provides. Dave has been head coaching the Waves for 10 years now. He is also in his 13th season as Co-Head Swim Coach at Campolindo High School and coaches for the Orinda Aquatics.
Supporting him in a senior role and as the 9&ups coach along with Dave, we are thrilled to welcome Sean Mason to our coaching staff. Sean has an extensive and distinguished coaching career within and outside of the OMPA. Sean spent 9 seasons as Assistant Head Coach at Orinda Country Club, 7 years as Head Coach at Moraga Swim and Tennis Club, and coached 4 years of Division 1 Swimming at the University of Nevada. Most recently Sean has been the Aquatics Director for the Claremont Country Club in Oakland. He will be a fantastic addition to the Waves and we are proud that he has chosen to join us.
We are also extremely pleased to welcome Deanna Chen as Coach Dave’s right hand with our 8 and Unders. Deanna also has had extensive experience in the OMPA. Most recently, Deanna has worked the last 2 years as the Assistant Head Coach at MVP, responsible for running the 8 & Under program. She is also an Assistant Coach for the Orinda Aquatics Fall Program and was a Campolindo High School JV Coach last year.
One of our favorite familiar faces, John Studebaker, will be coming back this summer to round out our senior coaching staff. John will be graduating from Sacramento State and we are fortunate that he wants to spend his summer working with our kids again!
As we have previously announced, we are also very fortunate that Christina Risso will be focusing her energy and enthusiasm on our Mini Waves this year. She has revamped the program to include a more focused approach without losing the primary goal of instilling a love of swimming from an early age. While Mini Waves is still considered to be part of the swim team, it will operate with more independence to better serve the unique needs of our youngest swimmers-to-be. Christina also remains the Aquatics Director for the club and will be working with the board on facility logistics and club interfacing.
We would like to again thank you for your patience and ask for your enthusiasm and support this season. Over the next week, you will be receiving several additional announcements including information on Spring Clinics, important Save-the-Dates, and workout times. In addition, we will be making some great improvements to our social programs and will be sharing some information on that as well.
Once again, let’s provide a warm Waves welcome to our newest additions and to our returning staff!
Go Waves!
Regards from your 2010 Waves Co-Chairs,
Shanette Westphal and Ann Huchingson

Hi MCC Families,
I am going to Swaziland in January to help with Orinda Aquatics’s outreach program.
Do you have any extra goggles or suits you’d like to donate? Please let me now at aquatics@moragacc.com or drop off any items at the pool office.
